MARCO LUBIANA - HUON & DERWENT PINOT NOIR 2023

TASTING NOTES

Cool vintage for the Huon but slightly warmer than 2020, cloudy summer resulted in a  softer fruit profile with soft tannins. No whole bunch used on Huon Fruit. The Derwent received more sun and had better ripening conditions, phenolic ripeness was perfect, low yields resulted in concentrated fruit which was great for 100% whole bunch. I'm happy with this new blend and i think it is very drinkable in its youth.

Hand picked, 50% whole bunch, aged in french oak barrels 228L, 15 percent new wood, one racking, no filtration, Estate bottled, minimal sulfur, vegan. First year making a blend of two sites, both grown by the Lubiana family Biodynamically. The wine is 50% Ruscello vineyard(Stefano Lubiana Estate) and 50% Lucille vineyard(Huon Estate). Blended after 10 months in barrel. I like how the two terroirs work together hence why i did a blend. Th Huon vineyard brings smooth tannins and concentrated fruit where as the Derwent vineyard brings perfume, spice and tight structure. Ruscello vines are roughly 30 years old, grown on sandy loam over gravelly white clay. Lucille vines are between 27-49 years old, grown on sandy loam over clay with cobble stones. Mixture of clones. 4 tonnes per hectare cropped. Enjoy!

ABOUT

The Lubiana family have been making wine in Italy since the late 1800’s in the northwest of Italy (today Croatia) , Andrea Lubiana left his family vineyard in Istria and moved his winemaking life from Northern Italy to South Australia for a new life after World War Two. In South Australia Andrea’s winemaking continued and was taken over by his son Mario Lubiana. Steve Lubiana was the next winemaker to continue the legacy and moved to Tasmania in 1990 to produce fine wines from cool climate varietals. After finishing high school I undertook a bachelor of Oenology and Viticulture at the University of Adelaide and graduated in 2018, during my time in Adelaide I worked for East End Cellars for two years where my palate was fine tuned to quality fine wines of France and Italy thanks to Michael Andrew Arthur and the team. Finishing university I was left with a strong interest in Burgundy, I went on to find an internship in Cote d’Or for the 2019 vintage. The experience was great and looking forward to another European vintage.
